With 34 fellows participating from across Mexico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, the seminar highlighted the importance of quality pediatric education and the strength found in interdisciplinary collaboration. Among 34 fellows, the seminar counted with residents and specialists in general pediatrics, pediatric allergy and immunology, hematology and oncology, endocrinology, and more.
Serving as course director was Dr. Rebecca Tenney-Soeiro, program director for the pediatric hospital medicine fellowship at CHOP and associate division chief of education and innovation for general pediatrics. She was joined by esteemed colleagues from CHOP: Dr. Kristine Dellabadia, Dr. Samuel Gottlieb, and Dr. Katie Lockwood. Their collective expertise spanned various pediatric specialties, providing fellows of equally diverse backgrounds with a comprehensive understanding of topics ranging from febrile neonates to behavioral health concerns.
As local faculty members from Mexico were Dr. Inés Álvarez de Iturbe, attending physician at the ABC Medical Center in Mexico City, and Dr. Diana Guerrero, deputy director of education at the Children’s Hospital of Mexico Federico Gómez.
Reflecting on the seminar, Dr. Tenney-Soeiro shared, “The general pediatrics seminar focused on recommendations and challenges related to febrile neonates, constipation, acne, urinary tract infections, neurologic and behavioral health concerns, and many other topics with pediatricians of many different backgrounds.” She further added, ” Serving as course director for the General Pediatrics course was an engaging and rewarding experience. Collaborating with other faculty, learning with and from the fellows, and spending a few days sharing our experiences and challenges were especially meaningful. It is a wonderful way to build a network and exchange knowledge to help children around the world.”
The seminar also provided a platform for fellows to connect and share experiences beyond the lecture hall. Dr. Laura Isabel Ariza Bastidas from Colombia highlighted the value of such international opportunities, noting, “International opportunities like this help build support and encouragement within the medical community.”
As we conclude this enriching seminar, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all faculty and fellows for their active participation and commitment to advancing pediatric care. The knowledge shared and connections made during this event pave the way for continued collaboration and improvement in child and adolescent healthcare across Latin America.
The OMI eagerly anticipates the upcoming CHOP-led seminars in Mexico, looking forward to more inspiring and empowering news!
