This week, the OMI Weill Cornell Ophthalmology partnership traveled to Mexico for the first time! 17 fellows from Mexico City and surrounding areas gathered at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Tec de Monterrey from March 27-29, 2023, for the OMI MEX Weill Cornell Seminar in Ophthalmology. Dr. Ana G. Alzaga Fernandez, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medicine, led the course for the first time. The expert Weill Cornell faculty members who also taught in Salzburg in 2022 included Dr. Charles A. Cole, Dr. Marc J. Dinkin, and Dr. Gary J. Lelli Jr. Local Mexican ophthalmologists who served as faculty members included Dr. Gerardo Ledesma-Gil and Dr. Jorge E. Valdez-GarcÃa.
The faculty put together a great schedule for the fellows, including lectures titled: That Looks Painful: Periocular Trauma Pearls, Updates in the Management of Herpetic Keratitis, Higher Order Cortical Visual Syndromes, Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery, Multimodal Imaging in Retina, and more. Monday and Tuesday afternoons were dedicated to fellows’ case presentations, in which 12 cases were presented from fellows’ personal work experience, and 1 case was selected by the faculty as an excellent case presentation.
On Wednesday afternoon, the fellows concluded the three-day seminar with the post-seminar test, lunch with the faculty, and the closing ceremony in which participants received their certificates. The OMI is incredibly grateful for the dedicated faculty members who not only serve fellows in Salzburg seminars, but have now shared their experience and expertise with Mexican physicians as well!
