Bulgaria is one of OMI’s target countries in CEE, with 808 Bulgarian fellows attending our seminars to date. After many years of supporting Bulgarian doctors on their educational journeys, our local coordinator, Dr. Krastina Stefanova-Kelly, has decided to step down from her role and to pass on the staff to Dr. Marieta Peycheva. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Stefanova-Kelly for her long-lasting support!
Dr. Peycheva has been an active participant in OMI’s programs since 2014. She has attended seminars ranging from her specialty of neurology to family medicine, global health, and rehabilitation medicine. Additionally, the specialist also took part in a clinical placement at the General Hospital of Salzburg.
Dr. Peycheva currently holds the position of Chief Assistant at the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. Besides her clinical activities, she is also responsible for teaching residents in her department. Since 2025, Dr. Peycheva has also been a member of the executive board of the Bulgarian Neurosonology Society. Her clinical and research interests are in the fields of stroke, neurosonology, atherosclerosis, vascular imaging, and rare vascular diseases. She has won numerous awards and received grants for her research and expertise in the field.
As local coordinator for Bulgaria, Dr. Peycheva plans to utilize her skills as a physician, teacher, and OMI alumna to promote the OMI programs to interested doctors, support Bulgarian fellows during their application process to OMI courses, and keep track of the success stories of her colleagues, amongst other tasks.
We cannot wait to see how the work of our newest local coordinator will impact the OMI programs and lead to the continued growth of the OMI community in Bulgaria!
