Nurses Take the Lead: Palliative Care Shines in Armenia

Jan 29, 2026

The OMI Satellite Symposium Palliative Care in Nursing, held January 19-20, 2026, in Yerevan, Armenia, was a joint initiative of the Open Medical Institute, the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and the Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center.

The two-day event brought together 39 nurses from hematology, oncology, and palliative care, all committed to advancing palliative care practice and strengthening nursing leadership.

International faculty included Sarah Lowry, DNP, ACNP-BC, AOCNP, ACHPN, from the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, and Dr. Carrie L. Cormack from the Medical University of South Carolina. They traveled to Yerevan after teaching for a week at the OMI in Salzburg.

Through lectures on palliative nursing, pain management, communication, and pediatric palliative care, the faculty members provided both evidence-based guidance and deeply human perspectives on care. An interactive communication lab and a roundtable discussion featuring local experts Dr. Narine Movsisyan, Dr. Anush Sargsyan, and Dr. Anahit Papikyan fostered interesting dialogue rooted in regional practice.

We are grateful to all faculty, participants, and organizers for making this event possible and for their support of Armenia’s healthcare system and patients.

The OMI satellite symposia are a vital extension of the OMI seminars, providing alumni the opportunity to invite distinguished faculty to their home institutions. The program plays a significant role in strengthening local capacity by facilitating direct collaboration between OMI faculty and former fellows in their professional environments. More symposia are on the horizon for 2026. Stay tuned for upcoming events!
