OMI Commits to Bulgaria with MoU Signing

Jun 18, 2025

In June, the Open Medical Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria. Rector Dr. Dimitar Raykov has firsthand experience with the OMI programs, having attended several orthopedic seminars and observerships over the past 20 years.

The Medical University of Varna is known as one of the most modern and high-tech universities in the country. It boasts more than a half century long history and traditions, with students from approximately 50 countries all over the world choosing to study there. The institution’s mission is to meet societal needs for highly qualified medical and management personnel in the fields of health and social care, as well as to develop scientific research, innovations, and new technologies, and improve the nation’s health.

To date, the OMI has awarded over 770 fellowships, some of them stemming from Varna, and 140 observerships to Bulgarian doctors, significantly contributing to their professional development.

Under the new agreement, MU Varna will nominate qualified fellows to attend OMI seminars in Salzburg. This partnership will lead to an improvement in the Bulgarian healthcare system by exposing young and ambitious doctors to top-notch postgraduate medical knowledge, which they are encouraged to share with their colleagues back home.

Additionally, the OMI will organize an annual satellite symposium in Varna, offering intensive, high-level training in specialized medical fields to local physicians. One such event will take place at the beginning of next year, with none other than OMI faculty Dr. Milena Pavlova, leading an economic evaluation in healthcare symposium. The Professor of Health Economics and Equity from Maastricht University has special ties to Varna, as she graduated from the university. She looks forward to returning to her educational roots and sharing her extensive knowledge with local public health professionals.

We are excited about this successful partnership with the prestigious Medical University of Varna and cannot wait to welcome an influx of Bulgarian doctors to our seminars and satellite symposia in the future!
