Global Insights: Observerships at Leading Austrian Hospitals

Mar 7, 2025

February started off our observership program for 2025 with a group of 10 observers from Bulgaria, Croatia (2), Ethiopia, Kosovo, Nigeria (3), Portugal, and Ukraine, joining the OMI in leading Austrian hospital centers. For the first time in over a year, all 5 leading hospitals hosted an observer at the same time: the General Hospital of Vienna hosted 4 observerships, the University Hospital Salzburg and the University Hospital Graz hosted 2 observerships, and the General Hospital Innsbruck and Sisters of Mercy Hospital Linz both invited 1 observer for the month. Each observer visited the department of their own specialty. Read about their experiences below:

Observership in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vienna

“I saw a rare case of uterus didelphys undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for the very first time. I intend to follow up on the IVF outcome of this patient, and, together with my mentor and Vienna colleague, with whom I saw the case, publish a case report and literature review on the reproductive challenges and IVF outcomes in women with uterus didelphys. I also attended the osteoporosis and dysplasia clinics, which I did not attend during my first observership. At the osteoporosis clinic, we saw and treated menopausal and postmenopausal women, women with primary ovarian failure, and women on cancer treatment that affects bone mineral density and fracture index. We currently do not run such a clinic back home and I intend to replicate this back home.”

Observership in Pediatric Urology, Linz

“I did my clinical observership at the Pediatric Urology department of the Sisters of Mercy Hospital Linz. I worked with a highly dedicated team of pediatric urologists led by Prof. Bernhard Haid. They were friendly and always ready to respond to my questions. I observed a lot of procedures, and interestingly, I saw a new perspective on managing a particular pathology that is different from the way we manage it back home. I think our patients will benefit from that technique, so I am going to implement it when I get home. Prof. Haid also reviewed some of the research work I am doing back home and made some important contributions to the work.  I was able to develop research ideas which I am already working on with his guidance.”

Observership in Otolaryngology, Salzburg

“The observership was such an amazing experience that broadened my view of advanced patient care and hospital management. I saw how the OPD and operation room setup was well organized, making it comfortable for the patient and the treating physician. I also learned/observed both the simplest things that I could implement right away as well as  advanced procedures that I will need time to equip and make arrangements for in my department.”

The OMI observerships are a unique opportunity to experience an Austrian hospital setting and learn from experts in each specialty. Observership applications for 2026 are currently possible through our online platform (link). If you have questions, you can reach out to observerships@openmedicalinstitute.org.

We look forward to seeing many applications for the upcoming period!
