Palliative Care and Nursing

Jun 18, 2021

The Open Society Foundations’ International Palliative Care Initiative convened its annual seminar on Palliative Care and Nursing from June 13 to 19, 2021 at Schloss Arenberg in Salzburg. The hybrid seminar brought together nurses from countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the former Soviet Union to discuss all aspects of palliative care and nursing. The seminar faculty presented several lessons from the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) curriculum.

The seminar was led by Betty Ferrell, RN, PhD, MA, FAAN, FPCN, CHPN, Director of Nursing Research & Education and a Professor at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, California. She is Principal Investigator of the “End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)” project.

The faculty included  Patrick J. Coyne, MSN, ACNS-BC, ACHPN, FPCN, FAAN, Nicoleta Mitrea, APRN, MSc, PhD, from Romania, Judith Paice, RN, PhD, FAAN and one new faculty member: Amy Haskamp, MSN, PCNS-BC, CPON, CHPPN.

“The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project is a national and international education initiative to improve palliative care. Since 2000, ELNEC is a collaboration between City of Hope, Duarte, CA and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Washington, DC. The project, administered by City of Hope, provides undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty, CE providers, staff development educators, specialty nurses in pediatrics, oncology, critical care and geriatrics, and other nurses with training in palliative care so they can teach this essential information to nursing students, practicing nurses and other healthcare professionals. To date, over 40,127 nurses and other healthcare professionals, representing all 50 US states, plus 100 international countries have completed a national or international ELNEC train-the-trainer course.”

The enormous impact of the ELNEC training becomes evident in the large number of scientific publications. Investigations by Betty Ferrell show that several of these publications have emerged as a result of ELNEC events in Salzburg.
